icograda young packaging 2005 competition

Problem: Design a predominantly paper package to hold an object. Be cognizant of over packaging as well, the packaging needed to serve a secondary function. The design was entered into the icograda Young Packaging 2005 Competition.

Solution: Silverware packaging. The solution holds a 16-piece flatware set. When the flatware is removed the four sides of the package can be unfolded into place mats for each setting. While the flatware is in the package it holds the four place mats together thus creating the package. One element relies on the other in order to fulfill the task.

The package is made entirely of white corrugated cardboard, with a minimal light blue screen-printed logo mark. The logo is cropped in half and placed on each side of the package, placing two or more packages side-by-side completes the logo. A sheet size of 8” x 11” is large enough to act as a place mat and still protect the silverware when the package is together. The paper stock was chosen due to the look and texture; white paper gives a clean look that is associated with flatware and the corrugation replaces the need for complex graphics. The unique look and texture of the packaging makes people want to interact with it.

The solution is easy to manufacture and put together, as it is four sheets of paper. Flatware is a common every day product and the package allows the flatware to easily be removed for use. Overall this package easily communicates to the viewer, is environmentally friendly and an original solution to the problem.

As a result of the competition the Special Award of the Jury Chairman was received as well as publication of the awarded design in icograda’s annual catalogue and website.
